A recent study suggested that 10% of foreign visitors to Abruzzo pursue an interest in buying property in the region. Abruzzo is relatively unknown but is increasing in popularity as an alternative to Tuscany as houses become more difficult to find there, and because tourism in the region is rapidly developing as people realize that Abruzzo may have more to offer than other traditional Italian and European holiday destinations. The morphological variety of Abruzzo's landscape brings together two separate environments that do not mix very easily: on the one hand there is the seaside in all its remarkable beauty and, on the other, the fascinating charm of its mountains; two quite contrasting landscapes brought together by gently rolling hills that blend together tradition and modernity.
The region also boasts an attractive coastline. The deep blue waters in this area conceal a startling variety of marine life and the shore borders on a series of sand dunes covered with typical Mediterranean marquis. There are some highly characteristic one-man fishing posts (called trabocchi) which are small huts built on piles. The sandy shores along the 140 km coast alternate with pebbly beaches surrounded by green hills covered with mulberries, strawberry trees, broom and also the smell of liquorices, lentiscus and pine forests.
It is just a short trip from the seaside resorts, projected into the future as modern coastal towns, to all kinds of landscapes ranging from the winding Apennines with their towering peaks and Calderone glacier, the southernmost in the whole of Europe, to highlands offering magnificent views across a picturesque landscape of woodlands, waterfalls and caves.
The natural environment is protected by three National Parks: Abruzzo, Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga and Maiella. Rare species of flora and fauna ( the Marsicano bear, Apennine wolf and Abruzzo chamois ) are the most distinctive features of what is still a truly fascinating natural setting.
Abruzzo is not only a region where nature reigns, but also an area where religion, art and history are deeply immersed in nature.
There are over 500 castles, watch towers and walls around the Abruzzo landscape, all built by locals to defend their land against potential invaders. Among the buildings to have survived the earthquakes are the castles of Balsorano, Bussi sul Tirino, Celano, Capestrano, Crecchio, Gagliano Aterno, L’Aquila, Nocciano, and Roccascalegna, as well as the Civitella del Tronto Fortress.
The mountains, above all the Maiella, conceal hermitages, where many anchorites retired to meditate, the most famous being Pope Celestino V, who according to tradition, retired to the hermitages of S. Spirito, of S. Bartolomeo di Legio and the Badia Morronese (Morrone abbey).
Numerous are the rocky churches built on sites of previous pagan temples. Most unique are the churches along the sheep-tracks, places of shelter and spiritual relief for shepherds and travelers.
In Abruzzo nature plays a determining role, it is obvious that we find genuine ingredients in its typical dishes. From the coastal areas to the inland areas, the abruzzese cuisine is simple and delicious.
One of the main ingredients is lamb, used in: Agnello cacio e uova (lamb with cheese and eggs), arrosticini (barbecued lamb), pecorino cheese, castrato, used also in the sauce for the traditional maccheroni alla chitarra, home-made pasta, for which a particular tool is used with metallic strings, which calls to mind a guitar. Mutton, goat, and pork are also widely used, such as in cif ciaf (ribs, sirloins, and fried bacon with spicy peppers).
The sausage too, is very tasty, such as: the Ventricina di Guilmi, the Ventricina di Crognoleto, the small mortadellas of Campotosto and the famous Capicollo, neck of pork made with pigskin, cartilage, and leftovers boiled and flavored before being made into sausages.
The entire region is also famous for its farmyard dishes: duck, goose, pigeon, and guinea fowl with a vast choice of fresh vegetables.
Along the coast the Abruzzo Cuisine features a number of excellent fish dishes such as: sprats and anchovies fried in pans or used for making pasta and timbales, Scapece alla vastese (fried fish covered with saffron and preserved in vinegar) and seppie alla sanvitese (cuttlefish) and the typical regional sea food soup, the Brodetto made with prawns, cuttlefish, cod, mullet, scorpion fish, grey mullet and sole, cooked with olive oil and paprika.
The cheese from Abruzzo farms is fabulous, such as: Caciocavallo, Burrelle (a pear-shaped cheese filled with butter) and the Caciotta, cheese made from a mixture of cow’s and sheep’s milk and occasionally spiced up with a touch of paprika.
One of the local specialties is the Virtu from Teramo: a typical spring soup made of cereals, vegetables, pasta and ham bone.
There is also a rich assortment of sweets: soft nougat and sugared almonds from Sulmona, famous world-wide, Christmas’s Calgiunitte (fried pastries filled with jam, chick-peas, dried fruit and nuts), Parrozzo, named by the poet D’Annunzio, Pizzelle (wafers made with a rectangular iron heated over a flame) and Bocconotti (pasty filled with cocoa and dried fruit).
Abruzzo is also known for its excellent olive oil: smooth, aromatic and its golden color.
Another lesser known but high-quality product from the Abruzzo region is truffles.
A third of the region is composed of coastal hills: a good place for grape-growing, particularly around the Province of Chieti.
Abruzzo’s wines are excellent and have recently obtained important international acknowledgement. The red Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, the delicate red Cerasuolo, and the fresh and inviting white wine Trebbiano are only a few of the notable wines of the region.
Farm holidays
In Abruzzo we find hundreds of farm holiday centers, where one can enjoy healthy open air activities, be in direct contact with farm life and its products, experience grape-picking and wine-making, and assist in the preparation of food preserves and all the agricultural activities of local tradition.
Sports
Moreover, it is even possible to enjoy such activities as horseback riding, mountain biking, trekking and excursions to discover the surrounding art villages and the secrets of a still unspoiled nature. But Abruzzo offers plenty of opportunities for all kind sports: for the adventure lovers it is possible to canoe and kayak in the open sea and inland waters. For sea lovers, diving, windsurfing, sailing and fishing are possible activities. Its largely mountainous, snow-capped landscape offers wonderful opportunities for trekkers, hiking, and climbers. During the winter season there also plenty of ski resorts with lifts and high-quality tourist amenities, as Roccaraso, Ovindoli and Campo Imperatore.
Relax
Halfway along among the wild scenery of the Maiella National Park and hills of the Pescara Valley, lies Caramanico Terme, the most important spa in Abruzzo.
Traditions and Events
Every year at Pretoro the miracle of the Wolf of San Domenico is revived and at Cocullo the well-known procession of the snake-charmers attracts thousand of people. Religious tradition is also combined with paganism as memories of stories are handed down from the past during the Farchie, a great fire commemoration at Fara Filiorum Petri and the joyful and multicolored flags procession of the Banderesi at Bucchianico.
Handycraft
The local craftsmen have learned from nature to shape and to work raw materials as stone, wood, iron to create art and crafts such as: the wood carvings at Pretoro, the majolicas of Castelli, the wrought iron of Guardiagrele, the ceramics at Rapino, the blankets and carpets at Taranta Peligna, the Tombolo lace and the golden filagree in Pescocostanzo and Scanno, and the traditional musical instruments like traditional ddu’ botte, which is made in Atri and Casoli and accompanies local songs and dance.
